Time’s Running Out For Your Umbraco 7 and 8 Websites

By Rich Ockerby

As Umbraco has made some massive strides in the past couple of years with the CMS – better interfaces for content editors, easier integration for developers and huge performance boosts – it’s time to say goodbye to some of the older versions.

Soon Umbraco will put two of their older CMS versions into ‘end-of-life’:

  • Umbraco 7 – September 2023
  • Umbraco 8 – February 2024

What does this mean for your Umbraco site?

When a version of Umbraco reaches end-of-life (EOL), no more security updates will be released for that specific version. While there are no known issues with the two latest versions (7.15.10 and 8.18.7) running software that’s no longer supported could have security implications and also go against your Cyber Essentials and ISO 27001 accreditation.

How can I find the current version of my Umbraco site?

Simply log in to your Umbraco admin area and click the question mark in the top right corner. You’ll see a new panel appear that will tell you your Umbraco version.

I’m on one of the end-of-life versions, what should I do?

While these dates seem far away, it’s recommended to start looking into the upgrade now. This will make sure you’re good to go with the new version before end-of-life hits. We’ve worked with Umbraco for a number of years and the complexity of an upgrade will depend on the type and amount of customisation done to your site.
