According to the latest research, an estimated 320,000 people are homeless in the UK – one in every 201. Our Adam, and his girlfriend, Amy, wanted to play their part to reduce this harrowing statistic, so they got involved with Shelter – England and Scotland’s response to homelessness and bad housing.

Throughout September, an event called HomeRun saw supporters cover as many kilometers as possible, raising money and awareness for Shelter and their ambition to end homelessness. Our pair began with the aim to travel 400km and raise £200, but when the month came to an end, they’d managed to smash their targets, raising a total of £301.74 (and counting), and travelling a total of 416.8km. 

‘The A Team’ ventured out into Newcastle’s surrounding countryside to complete their journey, visiting places such as Saltwall Park, Causey Arch, Derwent Valley, Jesmond Dene, and the Angel of the North. These strange times called for creativity, so bopping around at a few socially distanced gigs at the Virgin Unity Arena helped to boost the step count, and moving house meant getting lost in IKEA finally had an upside.

Shelter helps millions of people every year, not only by accommodating the homeless, but by providing services to the vulnerable and less fortunate. Their efforts are currently focused on giving renters better rights, and putting an end to discrimination against those on benefits. They’re also working to establish government policies to build more social housing, and help out those who need a roof over their heads – of which there are currently 1.2 million on the waiting list.
