The wait is over for all you plant-based pastry lovers. After 75 years of making northerners proud, Greggs has finally released a vegan sausage roll. Said to have 96 layers of light and crisp puff pastry, made with vegetable oil rather than butter, and a ‘bespoke’ Quorn filling, this could be the start of something amazing.

Although it’s a monumental and historical moment for the beloved pastry makers, the Twitter replies from the social team were on another level.

(Here’s a few of my personal favourites)

We tried and failed to get our hands on the vegan sausage roll due to popular demand, so we can’t comment on the taste yet, but it seems to be a big step forward for vegan convenience on the high street. Greggs sells over 1.5m traditional pork sausage rolls a week. Maybe the vegan version could begin to take the place of this national treasure? Or could this idea just be a bit flaky?
